Since 2012, two artists have been working under the name “miagolegno,” handling every step of the process from design to production. Each piece is made by cutting wooden elements with a scroll saw and carefully painting them by hand, one by one. As all works are entirely handcrafted, production is limited. Currently, their works are available through the official miagolegno website (including the online shop), at BEAMS JAPAN, and through solo exhibitions. Their works are also held in museum collections and featured in permanent exhibitions. Each piece is composed of dozens of intricately shaped wooden elements, assembled like a puzzle and brought to life with vivid colors. Despite their complexity, all parts are securely constructed so that the work remains intact even when lifted. The organic and dynamic motifs evoke a sense of movement, as if the forms might come alive at any moment. While the works feel pop and contemporary, the warmth of wood and the traditional joinery technique also lend them a subtle sense of nostalgia. By slightly shifting the individual pieces, changes in light and shadow emerge, and when illuminated, the works cast fantastical shadows on the wall—revealing different expressions depending on how they are displayed.
